Fire warning to boat owners
A fire officer is warning boat owners not to rely on fire services to deal with a blaze but to take their own precautions. "Fire and rescue services can experience difficulty in gaining access to an incident because of the remote location of some moorings", said crew manager Graeme Casper of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"This, on many occasions, results in the total destruction of the boat and to surrounding property". Owners are urged to make a fire action plan for their boats, to install a smoke alarm, and to fit gas and petrol vapour detector alarms in the bilge and cabin.

"The number of boat fires on our coastal and inland waters is relatively low," he said, "but when they do occur, they quite often have devastating consequences".
